In the clay workshop, each student will be given their own chunk of recycled clay from the Clay Studio. We will all share various tools that we can use to experiment with different mark-making and carving techniques. I will also demonstrate basic hand-building approaches and guidelines so that everyone is comfortable manipulating the clay using their hands and the tools provided. Together, we will discover its' parameters, and strive to appreciate the difficulty of sculpting this medium that has been used for many centuries. As an art teacher it is my job to be a keen observer of all my students so that I can jump when something excites them and gently push them when they struggle. Many children are self driven, and that's okay too! I let this kind of student go with their instincts. My ceramics table is welcoming space for all students to be themselves so they can feel free to experiment, accept, reject, flip upside down, gain perspective, observe, analyze, laugh and find their way back to the natural urge to create. This workshop is about playing together in the dirt and learning some new skills as we go! If your child wants to make something to take home and fire, I will provide information about firing temperatures and encourage you to connect with your local ceramics studio to fire their work!

Important Note: Because of the nature of this bustling market, I ask that parents/guardians stay close by and check in every 15 mins. Students can stay up to 45 minutes, but no longer than that. My table is small and this is a walk-up workshop. So, I want to give many children the opportunity to work with me. Please remember that I am here to facilitate a fun experience for your child, but I cannot assist children to the bathroom, nor follow them if they leave my table. This is why I ask that you check in on your child every 15 minutes (non negotiable). If your child is under 5 years old, the parent/guardian must stay at the table and assist this child directly throughout the workshop. Many small children love working with clay too, but they are not old enough to work with the tools on their own. Thank you for your understanding.

LKLIUBA is inviting you to attend a Suminagashi class. Suminagashi is an ancient Japanese art technique that translates into “floating ink.” It consists of creating ink patterns on top of water. It is a very relaxing activity with the bonus of creating not only beautiful but unique art.Suminagashi also has a lot of benefits for mental health. It helps with stress, anxiety and concentration while opening your creativity. This is a unique opportunity to connect with Japanese culture. You don’t need to have any previous knowledge or have a specific skill to attend the class. All you need is an open mind and willingness to learn.
