Koppitz is considered one of the leading art photographers in Vienna between the two world wars. His work ranges widely in subject matter, though he is most famous for his modernist nude studies. This image is from a group of rural scenes likely included in a 1936 exhibit of late work portraying Tyrolean peasant life, a group of 500 photographs called Land und Leute (Country and People). This one is titled “Folk from the Valley of the Mur".
